Invariance of fluid limits for the shortest remaining processing time and shortest job first policies

چکیده
We consider a single-server queue with renewal arrivals and i.i.d. service times, in which the server employs either the preemptive Shortest Remaining Processing Time (SRPT) policy, or its non-preemptive variant, Shortest Job First (SJF). We show that for given stochastic primitives (initial condition, arrival and service processes), the model has the same fluid limit under either policy. In particular, we conclude that the well-known queue length optimality of preemptive SRPT is also achieved, asymptotically on fluid scale, by the simpler-toimplement SJF policy. We also conclude that on fluid scale, SJF and SRPT achieve the same performance with respect to response times of the longest-waiting jobs in the system. AMS 2010 subject classifications. Heavy-traffic Limits for Polling Models with Exhaustive Service and Non-fcfs Service Order Policies
We study cyclic polling models with exhaustive service at each queue under a variety of non-FCFS (first-come–first-served) local service orders, namely last-come–first-served with and without preemption, random-order-of-service, processor sharing, the multiclass priority scheduling with and without preemption, shortest-job-first, and the shortest remaining processing time policy. For each of th...
متن کاملIs Tail-Optimal Scheduling Possible?
This paper focuses on the competitive analysis of scheduling disciplines in a large deviations setting. Though there are policies that are known to optimize the sojourn time tail under a large class of heavy-tailed job sizes (e.g. Processor Sharing and Shortest Remaining Processing Time) and there are policies known to optimize the sojourn time tail in the case of light-tailed job sizes (e.g. F...
متن کاملA Skorokhod Map on Measure-Valued Paths with Applications to Priority Queues
The Skorokhod map on the half-line has proved to be a useful tool for studying processes with non-negativity constraints. In this work we introduce a measure-valued analog of this map that transforms each element ζ of a certain class of càdlàg paths that take values in the space of signed measures on [0,∞) to a càdlàg path that takes values in the space of non-negative measures on [0,∞) in such...
متن کاملA bi-objective model for a scheduling problem of unrelated parallel batch processing machines with fuzzy parameters by two fuzzy multi-objective meta-heuristics
This paper considers a bi-objective model for a scheduling problem of unrelated parallel batch processing machines to minimize the makespan and maximum tardiness, simultaneously. Each job has a specific size and the data corresponding to its ready time, due date and processing time-dependent machine are uncertain and determined by trapezoidal fuzzy numbers. Each machine has a specific capacity,...
متن کاملQuantifying the Properties of SRPT Scheduling
This paper uses a probe-based sampling approach to study the behavioural properties of Web server scheduling strategies, such as Processor Sharing (PS) and Shortest Remaining Processing Time (SRPT). The approach is general purpose, in that it can be used to estimate the mean and variance of the job response time, for arbitrary arrival processes, scheduling policies, and service time distributio...
